A group of hacktivists working under the name Anonymous New Jersey have released personal details of MPs in Uganda in protest at the announcement controversial new anti-gay legislation will be coming into force before the end of 2012. Parliamentary Speaker Rebecca Kadaga announced that as a ‘Christmas present’ for supporters of the bill, which imposes tougher sentences on those convicted of ‘homosexual crimes’. The new legislation was tabled by MP David Bachati in 2009 and has caused anger around the world. The crime of ‘aggravated homosexuality’, which included sex with disabled, under-age or HIV positive people, was dropped after massive international pressure. However, the rest of the bill is still in place and many charities have warned their aid will be withdrawn if the country goes ahead with the legislation. There is also considerable international pressure to reverse the legislation.

Anonymous is a group with no membership rules or hierarchy who take direct action against organisations, countries and individuals who impose upon personal privacy and freedom. The group has the iconic Guy Fawlks mask, made famous by the film V for Vendetta, as its motif and has taken action against Scientology, Facebook, Visa and other organisations. To protest the bill in Uganda, the group published the names and personal contact details of every member of the Committee on Legal and Parliamentary Affairs, all of whom backed the bill last May. In a stark warning, the group signed the posting – We are legion, We do not forgive, We do not forget, Expect us. #NJAnon
