A Bill introduced in September by Katrine Hildyard MP has been approved by the South Australia Council and offers many of the rights to same-sex couples that were previously only available to heterosexual married couples. The Bill also legally recognises same-sex marriages that took place overseas. Katrine raised the bill in response to the tragic story of a British man who was left unable to organise the return of his husband’s body after he died during their honeymoon. The introduction of the Bill means that in similar circumstances, he could have organised the passage of the body back to the UK himself.
Another landmark Bill was passed this week in South Australia which allows same-sex couples the right to adopt a child together and have access to surrogacy.
