T he message from Rhondda Cynon Taf Council for this years IDAHOT is that there is no place for Homophobia, Transphobia or Biphobia in our communities.

As the highest ranked Welsh Local Authority in the Stonewall Workplace Equality Index, Rhondda Cynon Taf Council prides itself on being inclusive. Work is continually ongoing to promote the ideas of tolerance, fairness and respect, both in the organisation and in the community.

It is well known that a person’s wellbeing can be severely affected if they experience any form of hate crime or discrimination.  Homophobia, Transphobia or Biphobia can have a huge impact on the LGBT community and affect the wider community as a whole. Rhondda Cynon Taf Council wants people to be able to be themselves both in work and in the community, without living in fear, for the benefit of all.

Some of the work Rhondda Cynon Taf has been involved in over the last year to celebrate and support our LGBT community and colleagues includes:

  • Employees across the organisation making their own personal pledges to stand up for fairness and kindness and end bullying in all its forms as part of the Stonewall #NoBystanders campaign.
  • Attending Cardiff Pride and consulting with the LGBT community
  • Launched a staff LGBT network Perthyn
  • Launching a Allies network
  • Running a whole programme of events for Hate Crime Awareness week to educate all members of our Community about Hate Crime.
  • Celebrating LGBT History Month across Rhondda Cynon Taf, with events in our theatres, libraries and Community Centres.
  • Actively promoting LGBT Fostering week.

Rhondda Cynon Taf Council will be continuing to challenge the discrimination and hate crime that our LGBT community sometimes face by sending out a strong message of inclusiveness for IDAHOT 2017.  The rainbow flag will be flying high across the borough and there will be a number of events held across the Council with both Councillors and staff to highlight this important day.
